MetronusaNews.id | Tehran – Senior Iranian cleric Alireza Arafi has reportedly been appointed as a member of Iran’s leadership structure as of Sunday (March 1, 2026), amid public discussion surrounding the country’s constitutional succession mechanism.
Arafi, 67, is a prominent religious figure in Iran. He serves as head of the Qom Seminary (Hawza Ilmiyya) and is a member of the Assembly of Experts, the constitutional body responsible for appointing and dismissing Iran’s Supreme Leader.
Under Iran’s constitution, if the Supreme Leader is unable to fulfill his duties due to death or permanent incapacity, a temporary Leadership Council may be formed. This council consists of the sitting president, the head of the judiciary, and a senior cleric from the Guardian Council. Its mandate is to carry out leadership responsibilities until the Assembly of Experts formally appoints a new Supreme Leader.
Currently, the presidency is held by Masoud Pezeshkian, while the position of Supreme Leader remains officially held by Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
However, as of this publication, there has been no official announcement from Iranian authorities declaring a vacancy in the position of Supreme Leader or confirming the activation of a temporary Leadership Council. Circulating reports regarding Arafi’s role should therefore be viewed within the broader constitutional framework and ongoing public speculation about succession.
Political observers note that leadership transition in Iran is a matter of significant regional and global interest, given the Supreme Leader’s decisive authority over domestic, military, and foreign policy matters.
